Thailands Roti Pancake

Roti

Today I want to introduce you to one of my favorites.  Roti is a Thai confectionery item that is often found being sold by street vendors on the sidewalks of Thailands busiest roads.

what's in it?

Roti consists of thin and flat dough folded into a square and stuffed with bananas and egg.  It is fried in oil and lots of butter and topped with sweetened condensed milk and/or chocolate syrup.

It's to go

The Thai pancake is always served hot in a too go box, with two wooden skewers to eat it with.  You can often find them in front of convenient stores and in busy markets.

Tastes like heaven on earth!

The bananas and egg give it a creamy texture inside while the crispy fried exterior makes it a nicely balanced treat for an evening out on the town.

Here's a video of it being made!

Pad Thai

Pad Thai

Pad Thai is probably the most famous of Thailand's best dishes.  You can find it in just about all the Thai restaurants on this great big globe.

What makes it so great?

The art of making a good Pad Thai is all in the balance of flavor.  Too much of one thing and it overpowers the others.  the key is getting the balance right.

What's in it?

The three prominent flavors are salty, sour, and sweet.  The salty taste is from fish sauce.  The sour comes from a tamarind paste.  And the sweet is from palm sugar.  The three create the taste of Pad Thai.

But it wouldn't really be Thai food if it didn't have a kick to it!

Thai food is famous for being HOT.  However, if that doesn't suit you then you can ask for "My Phrik" or if you are feeling a little brave you can say "Noy Phrik" for a little bit spicy.  But I warn you it is to their discretion as to what a little bit means!

So, what types are there?

The three varieties of Pad Thai that you can find on the streets here in Thailand are shrimp, pork, and chicken.  I often go with the pork as it is often very savory (and I like that!).  the shrimp is really good too.  Often there will be crispy fried mini shrimps and onions sprinkled on to give it a little more YUM!
